BESTSELLER: Improving biodiversity with sustainable architecture

October 1, 2024

BESTSELLER is set to open Europe’s largest timber-built logistics centre in 2026. Designed by Henning Larsen, the project focuses on reducing CO2 emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and creating a healthy working environment for its 600 employees. Located just 60 kilometres from Amsterdam, this 155,000 m² facility will redefine the logistics typology by combining sustainable timber construction with cutting-edge environmental design.

Merging sustainability, logistics, and architecture to design for both business, people, and nature

The BESTSELLER Logistics Centre West (LCW) is set to become the largest timber-constructed logistics hub in Europe, marking a significant advancement in sustainable architecture. Designed by the Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen, the centre is a testament to the future of timber construction. It will also feature 23,000 m² of solar panels and biogenic materials like straw to maximise resource efficiency, minimise waste, and promote biodiversity, making LCW a pioneering example of sustainable construction.

Employee well-being and biodiversity are also core considerations. With a rooftop meadow featuring fruit trees and native plant beds, the building fosters a seamless connection between nature and the workplace. Designed to attract local wildlife and reduce heat absorption, the green roof enhances biodiversity while promoting a comfortable, energy-efficient working environment. Moreover, natural light, green spaces, and integrated indoor-outdoor elements ensure a healthy atmosphere for the 600 employees expected to work there.

The LCW facility is more than a logistics centre - it is a tribute to the Dutch landscape. With over 40% of the site dedicated to wetlands, forests, and green areas, the design carefully integrates the natural environment. The building will also feature green facades and a network of shaded outdoor areas, contributing to a microclimate that extends outdoor comfort in both spring and autumn.

Expected to open in 2026, LCW is a visionary project that merges sustainability, logistics, and architecture into a space that nurtures both people and nature, setting a new benchmark for European industrial buildings.
